FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q. If I have a University-owned cell phone today and I want to transition to an employee-owned phone, what do I do?
A. Start by speaking to the authorizer (or designee) responsible for approving cell phone/Smartphone purchases and reimbursements in your division or unit. He or she will need to authorize your request before any actions are taken. Once you have this approval, Purchasing and Contract Administration will be contacted by the authorizer or designee to terminate your existing University service. You will also need to determine your new personal carrier for your phone service (e.g., Verizon, Sprint, etc.) and select the plan that meets the combined personal and business requirements of your department.
Q. Can I transition my University-owned cell phone number to my employee-owned cell phone?
A. It is possible to transfer your existing number to an employee-owned phone with the approval of your authorizer (or designee). Your division will need to coordinate with Purchasing and Contract Administration to complete the required forms that transfer liability from the University to the employee. The cost for this transfer is the responsibility of the employee.
Q. Can't I just keep my University-owned cell phone or Smartphone and use it like I always have?
A. You can keep your University-owned cell phone or Smartphone, but the new policy
http://www-admn.csun.edu/vp/policies/900_oversight/900_16.htm requires that University-owned cell
phones must be used exclusively for business calls. The policy also requires that the bills for University-owned phones must be reviewed and approved by an authorizer (the President, a division Vice President, or the Executive Director of the University Corporation) or designee for compliance with the policy.
Q. Can I select any carrier that I want for an employee-owned cell phone?
A. You can select any carrier that meets your personal needs. All cell phone carriers receive reception on campus, so choose the most appropriate plan for your individual needs as long as it fulfills the business requirements for your department.
Q. Can I select any carrier that I want if I am going to get a new employee-owned Smartphone?
A. You can select any carrier that you like with the approval of your authorizer (or designee). Please keep in mind that IT has reviewed and tested a variety of Smartphone devices and has listed those Smartphones that appeared most compatible to synchronize to send/receive email for our Mirapoint users and send/receive email and calendar information for our Microsoft Exchange users.
The current list of CSUN IT-tested Smartphone devices is available at http://www.csun.edu/it/services/smartphones.html.
Please note that Smartphone vendors are continually producing new and updated models. The list of CSUN IT-tested Smartphones will be periodically reviewed and revised as necessary to reflect these vendor changes. IT has also identified cautions about Smartphones that did not test well with our CSUN environments.
