Why do we need to do this?
Administration & Finance is integrating email services with the campus mail servers that are maintained by IT. Emails will primarily be stored in the campus email servers (instead of the division servers). The campus mail servers uses Internet standard protocols such as IMAP and SMTP to store and deliver emails. These protocols allow mail clients such Pegasus Mail and WebMail to access centrally stored mailboxes. Since the protocol to access your mailbox has changed, Pegasus Mail needs to be reconfigured to send and access email. You will, however, be able access your email anytime, anywhere with any IMAP compatible email client including a web browser.
I use Pegasus but I've been hearing about WebMail. What is WebMail?
WebMail is the campus's web-based electronic mail system. Any CSUN faculty, staff or student possessing a valid campus account and password (from virtually any workstation with an Internet connection and a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator) can use it.
Is Systems & Technology going to support other mail clients such Netscape or Outlook?
"Pegasus Mail is a free, standards-based electronic mail client suitable for use by single or multiple users on single computers or on local area networks. A proven product, it has served millions of users since it was released in 1990. It is extremely feature-rich and powerful, yet remains small and fast."*
Systems & Technology supports only the Pegasus Mail client at this point.
How are the emails in my Pegasus Mail "CSUN IMAP INBOX" different from WebMail?
There is no difference, both are operating on the same message store (or mail storage area).
Do I need to sychronize my Pegasus Mail "CSUN IMAP" and WebMail?
No, both are operating on the same message store (or mail storage area).
Will I be able to see email stored locally in my Pegasus Mail folders in WebMail?
No, but you can create folders within your "CSUN IMAP" mailbox and then move emails from your "local" folders and move them into the IMAP mailbox. You will then be able to see those emails in WebMail.
Why do I get this error message? [picture]
This error message usually appears when your campus account password is not correctly entered in your Pegasus Mail "CSUN IMAP" profile. To correct this, reconfigure both your IMAP & SMTP profiles using instructions on this link, make sure to correctly enter your campus account password.
If this message occurs but you can still see emails in your CSUN IMAP mailbox, then it is safe to ignore it. Some Pegasus Mail specific operations may not be compatible with IMAP and is causing the error. If you just recently changed your campus account password then it is definitely a bad password in your CSUN IMAP profile.
Why does the floating "TellTale" window show a different number of new mail than what is actually in my CSUN IMAP inbox?
We're not sure of the reason for this issue but it might be because emails in the IMAP server do not delete immediately and therefore still count as existing emails.
Why do new emails go to two different "New or unread mail" folders?
Because we are integrating Pegasus Mail in phases, Pegasus Mail users that have not yet configured their SMTP profile, their emails will go to your old inbox. See below "Inbound email" for further information.
When I change my campus account password, do I have to change my passwords in Pegasus Mail?
Yes, when you change your campus account password, you must also change your Pegasus Mail IMAP and SMTP profiles to match the campus account password. THIS IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER: Pegasus Mail will issue the "STOP" error when your password is invalid. [picture] Otherwise, you will not be able to send and read emails. Information on how to change the password in Pegasus Mail is available on this link.
After reading new mail in the CSUN IMAP INBOX, will it automatically move to the Main Folder?
No, but you can manually move emails from your CSUN IMAP inbox to your local mailbox by highlighting the email you wish to move, clicking on the Move button, and then selecting the local folder you want to move it to.
Will new mail filtering rules work with CSUN IMAP INBOX?
No. New mail filtering rules need to be adjusted to work with the IMAP inbox.
How do I refresh my CSUN IMAP inbox?
Your IMAP inbox is refreshed automatically every 30 seconds, however, you can force a refresh by going to Pegasus Mail > File > Check host for new mail.
What is IMAP?
Internet Message Access Protocol allows a client to access and manipulate electronic mail messages on a server. It permits manipulation of remote message folders that is functionally equivalent to local mailboxes. [See Dictionary]
What is SMTP?
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is used to transfer electronic mail between computers [See Dictionary]
What happened to the broadcast (pop-up) message notifying me of new email?
There is no notification message for the IMAP mailbox. The IMAP mailbox should be checked regularly for new mail. You will continue to receive a broadcast message when mail is delivered to your "local" New Mail folder, but once the entire division has been moved to the IMAP server, you will no longer receive a broadcast message notifying you of new email.
When I try to close Pegasus Mail, I get a message about "Active TCP/IP Connections", what should I do? [picture]
This message appears because you have an open folder within the IMAP mailbox. Click "Cancel (don't quit)" find the open IMAP folders(s) and close them then close Pegasus Mail.
What is the email quota on the IMAP server?
Quota limits are available from this page: http://www-admn.csun.edu/vp/policies/500_itr/500_09.htm. As of this writing, the limit for Faculty/Staff is 100MB. That means you can store up to 100MB worth of emails including attachments, in your IMAP mailbox. Please note that this quota pertains to the CSUN IMAP mailbox only. The folders that are currently housed within your local mailbox do not count towards this quota.
Additional Notes
Inbound email from Administration & Finance Division and Athletics Dept, excluding PPM and Public Safety, will be delivered to your "local" mailbox. All other emails (users who have configured their mail client to use smtp.csun.edu to deliver their email -- e.g. the rest of the campus, PPM, Pub Safety, and non-csun.edu) will go to your IMAP mailbox (once migration is complete, all emails will go to the IMAP mailbox). There will be no pop-up notification for new mail arriving in the IMAP mailbox. Also, mail filtering may need to be adjusted.
Additional help with IMAP, SMTP and working with IMAP folders can be found in Pegasus Mail > Help > Help Index.
If you need further assistance or encounter problems with the new configuration, please submit a service request in the Systems & Technology support portal located at:
