INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR VENDORS & INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS

California State University, Northridge requires Certificates of Insurance of all vendors/contractors that provide services on behalf of the campus.

The vendor/contractor shall furnish to the University PRIOR to the commencement of work, an underwriter's certificate of insurance stating that there is insurance presently in effect for the vendor/contractor with the following limits:

LIABILITY COVERAGE : (comprehensive or commercial)

Minimum limits each occurrence $1,000,000, general aggregate $2,000,000.  Higher limits may be required due to the nature of the services or products provided.

EMPLOYER LIABILITY :  (commercial entities)  $1,000,000.

AUTOMOBILE LIABILITY :  provide proof of coverage with the following limits.

PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS - liability of $100,000 per person / $300,000 per occurrence; property damage of $50,000 per occurrence.

COMMERCIAL ENTITIES - business automobile liability with a combined single limit not less than $1,000,000 per occurrence.

WORKER'S COMPENSATION:  provide proof of coverage to statutory limits.

Insurance shall be placed with insurers with a current A. M. Best rating of no less than A:VII.

The general liability and automobile liability policies are to include additional insured endorsements that contain the following provisions:


1. The State of California; the Trustees of the California State University; California State University, Northridge; and  their employees, officers, agents and assigns are to be included as additional insured with respect to liability out of automobiles owned, leased, hired or borrowed by or on behalf of the contractor; and with respect to liability arising our of work or operations performed by or on behalf of the Contractor including materials, parts or equipment furnished in connection with such work or operations.  General liability coverage is to be provided in an endorsement to the Contractor's insurance, or as a separate owner's policy.
2. For any claims related to any project, the Contractor's insurance coverage shall be primary insurance as respects the Campus, its trustees, officers, employees, representatives and assigns.  Any insurance or self-insurance maintained by the Campus, its trustees, officers, employees or assigns shall be excess of the Contractor's insurance and shall not contribute with it.
3. Each insurance policy required by this clause shall be endorsed to state that coverage shall not be cancelled by either party, except after thirty (30) days prior written notice by certified mail, return receipt requested, has been given to the Campus.
4. All right of subrogation under the insurance policies have been waived against the Campus.
 

The certificate should contain a description of the activity or project for which the certificate is being issued.

These insurance requirements are made pursuant to the California State University Office of the Chancellor Executive Order No. 849 (February 5, 2003).
