The California State University, Northridge Police Department's K9 Unit is comprised of Corporal Leon Ortiz-Gil and his partner "Briska" and Corporal Tom Finnerty and his partner "Frieda", who came from CSU Channel Islands in February 2008. Both teams have had extensive training in explosives ordnance detection and train on a weekly basis with their German Shepherd partners, both of which are "bilingual", taking commands in both German and English.

The CSU Northridge Police Department K9 Unit was formed in 2005 and, at the time, specifically focused on explosives detection until the program was expanded to include tracking and suspect apprehension in late 2007.
