Great organizations are led by leaders who think not only about the present but also about the future. If we do not change and improve, we will be irrelevant in the future. Change happens, and as leaders we must manage it effectively. Why are some people and teams so effective at dealing with change, while others struggle? This session will explore the essentials of dealing with change effectively as a leader of a unit and as a member of the University community.

Working Together for Results – Collaboration and Cooperation David Levin Linda Reid-Chassiakos |
In some cases, it seems that the academy is a house divided by “turf” issues, where leaders spend significant time protecting the interests of their area, sometimes at the expense of the greater good. Resources and knowledge are not shared, teams spend time and energy protecting or nurturing what is in their “silo” and a “we/they”, “winner/loser” mentality is created. This session will detail the benefits of cross-departmental/divisional cooperation and collaboration, and provide examples of how to be a successful collaborator.

Is the performance management process just another administrative requirement that takes time and creates conflict with staff? In this session, you will learn how to use this process as a developmental and motivational tool to recognize performance, teach preferred courses of action and unleash the intrinsic motivation of staff members. You will receive information on how to be successful in the process and you will have the opportunity to interact with other administrators and learn from their experience.

Participants will learn how to understand and appreciate the perspective of the “other” and to break the cycle of action – negative response – escalation. As a result of this session, you will have the tools necessary to push down barriers to understanding and communication and have a method for building long-term effective relationships.

Leaders impact people and outcomes every day by their presence, actions and what they say and write. What we do and don’t do sends messages that impact how we, our department and the University are perceived. In this session, the presenters will cover a series of practical, easily-applied tips on becoming a clear and effective communicator and representative of the University.
