Skills Assessment Center FAQs
What is the purpose of the Skills Assessment Center?
- The Skills Assessment Center provides a tool to assist departments in evaluating candidates for ASA and ASC positions.
What is provided?
- Electronic, timed sessions which will rate skill levels in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and typing.
Why is it valuable to hiring departments?
- When the position description requires skills in Word, Excel and/or typing, the Skills Assessment Center can provide an evaluation of the candidate’s skills.
How do I refer a candidate to the Skills Assessment Center?
- After candidates who will be interviewed have been identified, call x 4354 to schedule skills assessment.
What is provided?
- Electronic, timed sessions which will rate skill levels in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and typing.
Is there a fee charged for the skills assessment?
- No; this service is provided free of charge.
What information will I receive as a result of the skills assessment?
- Within one business day of the candidate completing the skills assessment, the hiring department will receive an email report with the results. These results for Microsoft programs are delivered as percentage scores in beginning, intermediate and advanced levels of the program(s) assessed. The report also contains an overall score (as a percentage). The results for typing assessment are delivered as average words per minute (WPM).
How should I use the information I receive?
- You may find it useful to compare the scores of leading candidates.
- How much weight you give the scores should be based on the percentage of time these skills will be used on the job.
- Keep the information you receive with the search records.
Do I have to include the information provided from skills assessment in my hiring decision?
- We recommend that you establish a process for evaluating all candidates, and that every candidate be judged on the same criteria.
