From an EAP Lunchtime Learning Session presented by Debra Rozanski, Ph.D., EAP Coordinator

Tips for Getting Your Teen to Talk

  1. Listen more. Talk less.
  2. Don't assume you already know.
  3. Ask specific questions.
  4. Use "I" instead of "you."
  5. Soften your voice.
  6. Initiate conversations during a shared activity.
  7. Acknowledge what is not being said.
  8. Get curious, not defensive.
  9. Don't let your feelings block your ears.
  10. Pass it forward.
  11. Talk solutions.
