Finding Humanity During Difficult Times:
The Ethics of Philanthropy

Kirk Hyde, Entrepreneur and Philanthropist
Cancelled Monday, November 16, 2009

Please watch here for announcement of a new date in 2010

2:00 – 3:00 pm
Presentation Room, Oviatt Library

The current economy has made it difficult for some of us to take care of ourselves, much less think about caring for others.  And yet, that is what we do… it is who we are.  Philanthropy is unique to the western world, a phenomenon that may be likened to “manna for the soul”.  It is one of the most humanizing elements of our society; one that is not only necessary, but has the added benefit of making us feel good -- about ourselves and those we help.
Workshop Goals and Objectives

Mr. Hyde is currently the president of the Hyde Family Foundation. He is also the general partner of the KPC Limited Investment Partnership and the Hyde Family Partnership.  He was formerly the president and CEO of Kirk Plastic from 1975 to 2006. Kirk Plastic was the country’s leading manufacturer of high value credit and debit transaction cards.  In 1996, he sold his company and profits from the sale enabled Kirk to devote more time and money to his philanthropic pursuits.
For the past 20-plus years, Mr. Hyde has served on numerous non-profit boards. He was chairman of the local American Red Cross chapter from 2001 to 2003 and has served on their board of directors for twenty years.
Mr. Hyde graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor’s of Science in business.

MONEY AND MOODS

Debra Rozanski, Ph.D., Employee Assistance Program Coordinator
April 22, 2010
1:00 - 2:30 p.m.
Presentation Room, Oviatt Library

Money is the stuff that life is made of… or so they say.  Money affects nearly everything we do; it affects our dreams, our lifestyle … our plans for the future.  Concerns about money and financial security are a growing source of anxiety and depression.  It is not unusual for anxiety or depression to have a significant impact on personal relationships, physical wellbeing and job performance.  When money is tight, it can affect all aspects of our lives.
The way in which we deal with adversity is the key to successfully navigating this economic storm.  Although we can’t control the economy, in this workshop we will explore how we can control how we think and feel about it.

Workshop Goals and Objectives

Dr. Rozanski has been working in the field of mental health since 1978, initially as a Licensed Marriage, Family and Child Therapist, and later as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist.  She has been a CSUN employee since 2001, starting out with the Center on Disabilities as a counselor.  In 2008, she transferred to the Office of Human Resources where she currently oversees the Employee Assistance Program.  Dr. Rozanski’s areas of specialization are crisis intervention, rapid assessment and critical incident stress management.
