Tis that season. Again. The holidays can be a wonderful time of year, but for some of us they can also be a source of stress. Holidays are often portrayed as magical times when we gather together with loving family and friends, but there can be times when they don’t look or feel anything like the fantasy. The holiday season is a time of rushing about, hustling and bustling, trying to fit everything in; a time of over-spending, over-eating, and over-doing it all. For some, though, it can also be a time of too many houseguests and rekindled family strife… a time of unrealistic expectations about ourselves, our families, our friends and what this time of year is “supposed” to feel like. In this Lunchtime Learning Session we will explore the many reasons why the holidays can be so stressful and offer possible solutions that can bring more joy to your experience of the season. Dr. Steven’s mini presentation will be followed by an informal open discussion*. Here is a list of possible topics for the discussion:
* Please note: You are more than welcome to simply listen if you would rather not participate in the discussion.
About the Presenter:
Dr. Mark Stevens is a licensed clinical psychologist and Director of University Counseling Services at CSUN.

This experiential session is an extended opportunity for participants to practice the techniques of mindfulness learned in the first class (please see above). Because Mindfulness II is a more advanced class, it is recommended that participants first complete Mindfulness I.
Mindfulness II involves an in-depth exploration and practice of traditional mindfulness techniques, including awareness of the breath, body scan, mindful eating, and interpersonal mindfulness.
Although this is a “Lunchtime Learning” event, it is recommended that you eat lunch following the workshop.
Aisha Dixon-Peters, Psy.D, is a licensed psychologist. She has served as Staff Psychologist for University Counseling Services since 2007. She has been practicing and teaching workshops on mindfulness and relaxation techniques for several years. Her dissertation was on the psychological effects of hatha yoga on low-income women who are survivors of domestic violence. She has found mindfulness to be profound, beautiful, and transformative, and is grateful for opportunities to share this practice with others.
