Professional Development Staff and Supervisor Training
(All Sessions will be held in the HR Training Room, Oviatt Library 16, Garden Level)
Presented by Susan Leahy
Thursday, September 17, 2009
9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
HR Training Room, Oviatt 16, Garden Level
Intended Audience: All Interested CSUN Staff and Faculty
We are experiencing significant organizational change at CSUN. In most institutions, organizational change is a constant. Reponses to organizational change vary widely among individuals. When change happens, each person responds in his/her own way. Whether or not we are aware of it, we each have a kind of “default” reaction to change. Generally speaking, most of us are in one of three recognized change modes – we move toward change, we move away from change, or we move against change.
Awareness of our personal reaction to change is the first step in dealing effectively with organizational change. Once we are aware of our typical or “default” reaction to change, we may then make a conscious effort to use functional behaviors that are helpful in effectively adapting to it. In this session, you will:
* Discuss with other staff members why change is difficult and identify some of the changes that are occurring both within the university and in our external environment that you experience as challenging;
* Take the change assessment tool, “Change Reaction – Understanding Your Response to Organizational Change” to both learn about your typical reaction to organizational change and identify effective responses to such change;
* Receive tips on how to focus on the benefits associated with change;
* Be introduced to strategies useful in managing change and moving toward acceptance;
* Be introduced to strategies for reducing fear of change and becoming a “change agent.”
Join this positive and interactive workshop to learn how to make change work for you. Reduce your resistance and get on board to effectively manage the multiple changes within your professional life.

Emotional Intelligence I was so successful, that this course is being offered at the request of many of the course’s participants for an intermediate level session. Participants of Emotional Intelligence I will benefit most from this current session, as the facilitator will not review much of the material from the first course. For that reason, registration preference will be granted to participants of that first session. Registration will not, however, be limited to only those who attended the first class.
Emotional Intelligence (EI) can be described as the ability to first understand and then to manage yourself and your emotions in difficult situations. In this three-hour workshop, building upon lessons learned in EI 1, participants will be introduced to more and deeper important concepts involved in understanding themselves and their emotions and in acquiring the skill of effectively managing themselves and their emotions. This course was so popular last semester that it has been brought back by popular demand!
Negativity matters! The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that U.S. organizations lose over three billion dollars each year to the effects of negative attitudes and behaviors in the workplace. Increased stress, susceptibility to disease, anxiety and depression are but a few of the human consequences of a negative work environment.
Positivity matters more! Research has shown that positive attitudes and behaviors can counter the effects of negativity in both our professional and personal lives. It is particularly important during these times in which we may be feeling “the furlough squeeze”, to consciously work to create and maintain positivity in our workplaces.
If your work environment is in need of some positive changes, come join us for “Making Your Personal Contribution to a More Positive Work Environment”. In this interactive workshop, we will discuss tools and strategies useful in changing a negative work environment into a positive, more enjoyable one.
Course Objectives:
* Discuss the impacts of negativity in the workplace
* Discuss concepts from the Book , “How Full is your Bucket” by Tom Rath and
Donald O. Clifton
* Create awareness about each person’s choice to contribute to the work environment

* Learn positive strategies for managing work-related stress and negativity
