How many units are covered through this program?
 

Any combination of 6 units or 2 classes, which ever is greater, per semester. For example 2 four-unit courses is eligible, just as 1 one-unit course, 1 two-unit course, and 1 three-unit course is eligible through this program. There are several other combinations of courses that are eligible through this program.

What fees are waived or reduced through this program?
  The fees that are waived or reduced depends on your bargaining unit contract. E-mail Sue Talavera at feewaiver@csun.edu for further clarification regarding cost of tuition.
How do I know if I am eligible for fee waiver?
  In order to determine eligibility, you must submit the CSU Fee Waiver and Reduction Program application for the semester you wish to take courses. After the form is processed, you will be notified of your eligibility status.
How will I be notified of my eligibility for this program?
  You will receive an e-mail one week after each deadline indicating our receipt of your request, your eligibility status, and final procedures.
How often do I have to apply for this program.
  You must submit an application to this program each time you or your dependent intends to register for classes. The application must be submitted by appropriate deadlines.
Are Faculty Early Retirement Program (FERP) employees eligible for fee waiver?
  FERP employees are considered tenured faculty and are eligible for fee waiver only during the semesters/quarters that they are actively employed.
I am a temporary employee, am I eligible for fee waiver?
  Your eligibility is determined by negotiations between the the Chancellor's Office and your bargaining unit representatives. In order to determine eligibility, you must submit the CSU Fee Waiver and Reduction Program application for the semester you or your dependent wishes to take courses. After the request is processed you will be notified of your eligibility status.
Are University Corporation, University Student Union, or Associated Students employees eligible for this program?
 

No, University Corporation, University Student Union, and Associated Students employees are not eligible; Fee Waiver is a state funded program for those employees who are funded by the state.

Can the CSU Fee Waiver and Reduction Program be used at any CSU campus?
 

Yes, you may take state funded classes at any CSU campus, however you must contact the fee waiver coordinator at the campus of your choice in order to adhere to their deadlines and regulations.

Can I take one class and my dependent take one class through this program?
 

No, only one person can use this benefit per semester/quarter?

Can this program be used at a UC campus?
 

No, this program cannot be used at a UC campus since UC campuses are privately funded in addition to receiving some state funds.

Is the CSU application fee waived or reimbursed?
 

Yes, the CSU application fee is waived or reimbursed through this program.

Where can I get a copy of the CSU Fee Waiver and Reduction Program application?
 

Visit our main Web page at http://www-admn.csun.edu/hrs/benefits/FEEWAIVER.html and select the Enrollment Forms and Deadlines link. Scroll down to the appropriate term and click on the CSU Fee Waiver and Reduction Program Application link. This link is different for each term and should be accessed and completed each time you wish to use this benefit. Requests may be submitted several semesters/quarters in advance. Your request will be electronically submitted to our office and you will be redirected to the CSU Fee Waiver and Reduction Program Web page one you have clicked "Done" at the end of the application process. Fee Waiver requests must be completed online by the appropriate deadline. An e-mail indicating receipt of request will be sent to all participants one week after each deadline. If you do not receive an e-mail, please follow up with the fee waiver office at 818-677-2173 to verify your request was received.

How do I enroll in my classes and view charges on my account?
 

Enrollment can be done quickly and easily by accessing your Web portal and clicking on the Services for Students link. A list of options will the display. Click on the Enroll in a Class link followed by the semester you intend to enroll. If you have any questions, contact Admissions and Records. Once you have successfully enrolled in your classes click the Charges and Payments link followed by View Account Information and then the Current Charges Due link to ensure your fees were waived and reduced accordingly.

Are Extended Learning courses covered through this program?
 

No, Extended Learning courses are not through this program; fee waiver is a state funded program for those courses that are offered and funded by the state.

Are out-of-state fees covered through this program?
 

No, unfortunately out-of-state fees are not waived or reduced through this program.

Do I have to take classes toward a degree?
 

No, you can attend any class offered by CSUN as long as it is either part of a career development plan or work-related.

Do I have to apply to CSUN or fill out a CSU application in order to take classes?
  You only have to apply to the CSU of your choice if you are taking classes toward a degree program. If you are taking work related or personal development classes, then the CSU Fee Waiver and Reduction Program application acts as an application to the University.
What form do I have to fill out?
  The CSU Fee Waiver and Reduction Program application can be accessed by visiting our main Web page at http://www-admn.csun.edu/hrs/benefits/FEEWAIVER.html and select the Enrollment Forms and Deadlines link. Scroll down to the appropriate term and click on the CSU Employee Fee Waiver and Reduction Program application link. This link is different for each term and should be accessed and completed each time you wish to use this benefit.
Can I take classes during work hours?
  You may only take one class during your work hours through release time, which is paid time to take a class. You do not need to take the class during your lunch hour or take vacation time or sick time if your manager has approved you to take release time. This class must be work related or part of a degree program. It is up to your supervisor's discretion whether your class time interferes with your workload.
Can I arrange an alternative work schedule?
  It is up to you and your supervisor to negotiate an alternative work schedule.
Where do I pay my fees?
  You may pay your fees at Cash Services or online through the Web Portal. This program does not offer a full waiver of fees so you will need to pay any balance of fees in order to remain enrolled in your classes.
Do I have to obtain a student CSUN I.D. card?
  No, you will use your employee I.D. card.
I want to attain a degree, but I don't know what classes to take.

Spouse, Domestic Partner, or Dependent Child Program

Who can I transfer this benefit to?
 

It depends on each bargaining unit, however, most employees are allowed to transfer this benefit to their spouse, registered domestic partner, or dependent child.

What are the eligibility requirements of a dependent child?
  A dependent child is defined as: (1) a child or stepchild under the age 23 and who has never been married; (2) a child living with you in a parent-child relationship who is economically dependent upon you, under the age 23, and has never been married; or (3) your child or stepchild, age 23 or above, who is incapable of self-support due to a disability which existed prior to age 23.

Do I have to report the classes that my dependent is taking each semester?
  No, however your dependent must be enrolled in a degree program and taking courses toward the attainment of that degree or credential in order to be eligible.
What happens if my dependent child turns 23 before the start of the semester?
  Unfortunately, your dependent child would not be eligible for the coming semester/quarter.
What happens if my dependent child turns 23 during the semester?
  Your dependent child is eligible for the program until their 23 birthday. If that occurs during the semester, the dependent child is allowed to complete the semester using this benefit but will not be eligible for the following semester.
Can my dependent enroll in more than 2 classes?

No, the benefit cannot be shared; only one dependent is eligible per semester/quarter. You may, however, alternate the benefit amongst the two people every other semester/quarter.

Does my dependent have to pay out-of-state fees?
 

Yes, out-of-state fees cannot be waived or reduced through this program.

My dependent child is over the age of 23, is he/she eligible for fee waiver?
 

Only if he/she is incapable of self-support due to a disability which existed prior to age 23.
