| Duties: | |
| Under general supervision during training period and general supervision thereafter, will provide holistic academic advisement services in one or more academic departments within the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences, primarily working with students in the Department of Sociology. Assist with the implementation of advisement and student services activities coordinated through the Student Services Center/EOP. Provide individual and group academic advisement to prospective, new freshmen and transfer, continuing, and returning students. Explain university degree requirements, and academic policies, procedures, and regulations. Provide specialized advisement pertaining to the assigned major department; and assist students with educational planning, course selection, and other advisement and student issues. Assist with monitoring student academic progress and facilitate solutions to problems related to degree completion. Attend staff meetings and staff development/training sessions. Assist in representing the College and/or Department at activities such as An Evening at Northridge, The Majors Fair, University Open House, New Student Orientation, EOP interviews and events, and Community College Admission Days. Provide regular updates, prepare oral and written reports. Perform other duties as assigned. | |
| Qualifications: | |
| Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities listed may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Equivalent to one year of full-time experience in professional student services work at the entry/trainee level. Previous experience working in a major college or university department and/or academic setting, in a multi-cultural environment, and working with diverse student populations is preferred. | |
| Knowledge, Specialized Skills, and Abilities: | |
| Working knowledge of: methods and problems of organization and program management; principles of individual and group behavior; and techniques and methods of interviewing. Ability and specialized skills to: rapidly acquire a working knowledge of the various programs offered by CSUN; gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations; advise students individually and in groups; clearly express ideas and recommendations orally; write clear and concise reports; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and faculty; work effectively under pressure during peak periods; and complete assignments in a timely manner. | |
