| Duties: | |
| Under general supervision of the Coordinator of Interpreting Services, provides lead work direction and coordination to individuals providing interpreting services and related support to Deaf and/or Hard-of-Hearing consumers. Assists with scheduling and assigning interpreters; performs interpreting services for students, staff/faculty, and campus community; arranges interpreting substitutes on a daily basis; acts as a back-up for captioning, note taking substitutes; facilitates and participates at in-service activities; assists in the recruitment and selection of interpreters through skill evaluations; monitors work quality and provides input to performance evaluations; reviews monthly timesheets; serves as a resource and campus liaison to faculty, staff and service providers on technical, confidential, and sensitive matters; provides one on one and group orientation and work instruction to new interpreters and/or captionists and trains on University procedures. Performs other duties as assigned. | |
| Qualifications: | |
| Equivalent of two years of relevant documented interpreting experience in a variety of settings is usually needed to perform at the level required for position assignments. Must possess and maintain skills certification in both: Interpreting and Transliteration from Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or certification at a Level 4 from National Association for the Deaf (NAD) or comparable certification is required. NAD certification at Level 5 is preferred. CI or CT (both preferred) or NIC Advanced (Master preferred). Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university is preferred. | |
| Knowledge, Specialized Skills, and Abilities: | |
| Thorough knowledge of techniques of standard supervisor and training techniques; demonstrates a thorough understanding of student and classroom needs in a university setting; possess a thorough knowledge of nationally recognized certification requirements, such as those recognized by RID and NAD; and possess a thorough understanding of appropriate interpreter protocols and the NAD-RID Code of Conduct. Should be familiar with Assistive Listening Devices. Ability and specialized skills to: facilitate and provide technical training; demonstrate organizational skills related to scheduling; assess student needs and interpreter skills to make effective matches between students and interpreters; demonstrate a high level of American Sign Language (ASL) and English vocabulary and voicing and register; provide lead work directions to others; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; organize, coordinate, and prioritize multiple tasks; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others; operate standard office machines and computers; proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and FileMaker Pro, multi-phone line and text pager. | |
