Emergency Procedures: Earthquake:
IF YOU ARE OUTDOORS
1. Move quickly away from buildings, utility poles, and structures. The safest place to be is in the open.
2. CAUTION: Always avoid power or utility lines as they may be energized.
3. If in an automobile, stop in the nearest safe place available - preferably an open area away from structures, power lines, and trees. Stop as quickly as safety permits, and stay in the vehicle.
IF YOU ARE INDOORS
1. Duck, Cover and Hold - Take cover under the nearest sturdy object such as a desk, or a table. Make sure to hold onto the object since it will probably move during a large earthquake.
2. Keep away from and avoid bookshelves, file cabinets, and overhead fixtures.
3. Shut off gas and electricity to any equipment being used - i.e. hotplate, Bunsen Burner, etc.
4. Help the injured Give first aid and protect injured individuals from aftershocks.
5. Put out small fires with available fire extinguishers.
6. Injured who can walk should be helped to the first aid station. (Student Health Center)
EVACUATE TO
Parking lots and open areas (see Building Evacuation section for evacuation details). Watch for downed power lines, and fallen debris. Campus Police or Floor Wardens will provide additional information about the evacuation areas.
PLAN AHEAD
DO NOT store heavy items on high shelves. When possible, locate book cases and file cabinets away from areas where people normally sit for long periods of time (i.e. work desk). Know your evacuation route and evacuation area. If you are an instructor, make sure your students know where their evacuation area is located.
