Campus Emergency Procedures: Bomb Threat

Report ALL bomb threat calls to the Department of Public Safety (911)

The President, or in her absence, the senior Vice-President, shall order an evacuation of the building whenever there are sufficient facts to indicate that the bomb threat is valid or whenever a foreign object or package has been discovered during a preliminary search, unless events dictate that the Director of Public Safety take immediate action. University Police Officers will coordinate the evacuation of the building with the assistance of Floor and Building Wardens. The Los Angeles Police Department will be contacted for the removal of any suspected bombs or explosive devices. The order to evacuate will be communicated through building alarms, or through direct word of mouth if a single building is involved.

• ANY PERSON RECEIVING A PHONE CALL THAT A BOMB OR OTHER EXPLOSIVE HAS BEEN    PLACED ON CAMPUS, IS TO ASK THE CALLER:

» When is the bomb going to explode?

» Where is the bomb located?

» What kind of bomb is it?

» What does it look like?

» Why did you place the bomb?

• KEEP THE CALLER ON THE PHONE AS LONG AS POSSIBLE; LISTEN CAREFULLY TO THE    CALLER AND TRY TO DETERMINE AND RECORD THE FOLLOWING:

» Date and Time of the call

» Exact words of the Caller

» Age and Sex of the Caller

  » Speech pattern and/or accent

» Emotional state of the Caller

» Background noises (i.e. Traffic, etc.)

• UNIVERSITY POLICE OFFICERS WILL CONDUCT A DETAILED BOMB SEARCH. FACULTY AND    STAFF ARE REQUESTED TO MAKE CURSORY INSPECTIONS OF THEIR AREAS FOR    SUSPICIOUS OBJECTS AND TO REPORT THEIR LOCATIONS TO THE DEPARTMENT OF    PUBLIC SAFETY (ext. 2111).

   DO NOT TOUCH THE OBJECT!

• IF YOU OBSERVE A SUSPECIOUS OBJECT OR POTENTIAL BOMB ON CAMPUS, DO NOT    HANDLE THE OBJECT! CLEAR THE AREA IMMEDIATELY!
